Bridging the Gap for Readers Who Struggle with Traditional Phonics Instruction

R3X uses brief, adult-guided instruction to build automatic sight-word recognition, fluency, and comprehension while phonics skills continue to develop, helping students read successfully and keep pace with their peers.

Students read cumulative text made primarily from words they already recognize automatically. Each book introduces only a few carefully selected new words, then uses familiar sentence meaning and focused adult phonics support to help those words become automatic.

The reading problem

When phonics skills do not become automatic fast enough

Many struggling readers receive traditional phonics instruction but continue to read word by word, slowly sounding out words they have encountered before. Even after a phonics pattern has been taught, the word may not yet be recognized with enough automaticity for successful connected reading.

When too many words require effortful decoding, reading repeatedly stalls and cognitive load increases. The student must devote limited working-memory resources to identifying patterns, recalling sounds, segmenting, blending, and reconstructing each word. Fewer resources remain for fluency, sentence meaning, integrating ideas, and comprehension.

R3X carefully controls the number of unfamiliar words in each book. Familiar words preserve sentence meaning and help the student narrow and confirm a new word. When reading stalls, the adult provides focused phonics support and immediately guides the student back into the sentence. Once the new word becomes automatic, it joins the student’s Automatic Word Bank and becomes part of the foundation for later books.

R3X uses a structured adult-guided cycle built around current student performance, cumulative connected text, focused phonics support, repeated reading, comprehension checks, and real-time instructional data.

Assessment

R3X identifies an appropriate starting point through teacher-scored, untimed Initial Placement. The adult uses Level Locator and Book Placement, selecting Automatic, NAY, or Unread to record the student’s first response. R3X recommends a starting book, and the teacher confirms the final starting point before instruction begins. Baseline, middle-of-year, and end-of-year checks provide structured progress-monitoring data.

Adult purpose: choose the correct starting point and adjust instruction over time.

Reading Cycle

The student reads cumulative text built primarily from words already recognized automatically, with only a few new Active Learning Words in each book. Clear sentence meaning helps narrow and confirm the new word. Focused adult phonics support is added when reading stalls.

Result: repeated successful reading adds new words to the student’s Automatic Word Bank.

Comprehension Check

After reading, the student completes two types of grade-level comprehension questions. Direct Questions are scored by the program. Teacher-Guided Questions use teacher directions, expected-answer guidance, text evidence, and a 0–100 teacher score in 5-point increments. Scores below 70 enter Review. After the Questions stage, only items needing support move into Review for discussion or reteaching while the original score is preserved.

Connection: accessible reading text remains paired with grade-level comprehension thinking.

Real-time instructional data

R3X shows the adult which words are automatic, which are Not Automatic Yet, how fluency is changing, and where comprehension support is needed. The Home Screen and Reports organize the information for immediate instructional decisions.

Who R3X supports

For students who struggle to use phonics efficiently during connected reading

Some students can participate in traditional phonics instruction yet still struggle to separate words into sounds, recall the sounds associated with letters and patterns, hold those sounds in working memory, and blend them back together quickly enough to recognize the word while reading.

R3X provides an additional bridge while traditional phonics instruction continues. Students read cumulative connected text built mostly from words they already recognize automatically. Each book adds only a few new Active Learning Words in clear sentences where familiar words and meaning support recognition.

Through repeated successful reading, each new word becomes part of the student’s Automatic Word Bank and is used again as known vocabulary in later books. The reading path grows with the student instead of restarting with every passage.

R3X was developed, used, and refined through years of regular classroom instruction with struggling readers in a 4–6 special day class. This classroom implementation shaped the adult-guided instructional cycle, focused phonics support, automatic-word tracking, repeated reading, fluency practice, and comprehension process used in the current digital system.

R3X later expanded to include students in additional special education and general education classrooms. In the two-year individual case, first-read fluency increased from approximately 49 to 82 correct words per minute.

Core Reading

One cumulative reading path, from Bridge 1 through Bridge 10

R3X Core Reading includes Bridges 1–10. Each book is written primarily with words the student has already made automatic and introduces only a small number of new Active Learning Words in meaningful context.

As those words become automatic, they join the student’s Automatic Word Bank and are used as known words in later books. Across the ten Bridges, students encounter approximately 1,100 Active Learning Words drawn from high-frequency, academic, literary, science, social studies, and functional vocabulary.

Comprehension questions are selected according to the student’s grade level, allowing the student to read accessible text while continuing to practice the comprehension thinking, academic language, and question types expected in their grade.

R3X was developed around a practical classroom need: students required frequent, individualized reading support, but instruction also had to fit within the demands of a working classroom.

The program guides the adult through the instructional cycle, records student responses in real time, and organizes the resulting information automatically. This reduces time spent preparing materials, scoring, calculating, managing records, and deciding what comes next.

Privacy and technology

Student information stays local and under your control

Students do not need email addresses, online accounts, or cloud logins to participate in instruction. Student records are stored in the R3X program on the adult’s computer, and R3X itself does not transmit student information to cloud services.

Encrypted backup protection helps reduce the risk of losing instructional records. Schools, programs, and families choose where protected backup files are stored. De-identified analysis exports are created only when an educator intentionally chooses to create one.
